In addition, in the last 10 years,NBO has produced 17 Opera-in-the-Park concerts in various nearby communities.NBO has an extensive outreach program with dress rehearsals open to schools& [has performed] Menotti’s Amahl & the Night Visitors to 2,000children. (From NOV 1996/BBC Music Magazine LONDON, ENGLAND)

In April of 1987, North Bay Opera was formed as a regional opera company. The area offered a vast source of talent, but no opera company had ever been established in the primarily agricultural community. The staff of the newly formed non-profit organization courted an audience through a series of four events during the first year, “The Aria”, “The Ensemble”,and “The Scene”. In February of 1989, North Bay Opera presented the final work in the series, “The Opera”, with a fully staged production of Madama Butterfly. By this time, a large loyal audience insured the company that there was indeed a place for an opera company in Solano County.

In the years that followed, North Bay Opera has continued its commitment to providing training and experience for singers and related personnel, and quality performances at affordable prices to the public. It has produced fully staged operas in Suisun, Vallejo, Vacaville, and Fairfield, California.

NBO has worked with many other local organizations including the Vallejo and the Solano Symphonies, the Air Force Band of Travis Air Force Base, the Vacaville Arts Council, Vallejo Arts Commission, the Fairfield JuriedArt Show, Fairfield Civic Arts, the Magic Program, Solano Collage Theater and numerous civic, social and service organizations.

As a part of an active outreach program, school children have been invited to participate in a student demonstration of the opera prior to attending a dress rehearsal. School performances have been held during the week, and the cast answer questions following the performance. In addition, hundreds of children have participated in numerous productions.

North Bay Opera is a member of the prestigious Opera America, WashingtonD.C. and has a working relationship with several Northern California opera companies. In 1996, North Bay Opera was interviewed by a writer for theBBC Music Magazine, London, England, and an article appeared in their opera issue featuring five companies under the heading of “Not Forgetting…Triumphs On A Small Scale.” North Bay Opera was the only one mentioned from the United States. North Bay Opera has also been listed in national publications such as Opera News and The New York Opera Newsletter.
